Press Release
The Volta Lake, formed by Akosombo Dam, is Africa's largest man-made lake (8700 square kilometers). Home to about 500,000 people, the majority of the population in the Volta Lake Basin lacks access to social amenities, including healthcare and educational services. Network coordinated the production of a documentary film on Ghana’s boat clinic program, working with the Ghana Health Service and other collaborators. The film was shot by Digital Development Communications (DDC) in July and August of 2005, and highlights the health needs of communities in the Volta Lake Basin, GHS’ efforts to reach out to these communities with healthcare services, and how Network, the GHS, and other partners are collaborating to increase the reach of the program. It will be used as a tool to transmit best-practices learned in Ghana to governments, organizations, and agencies in other parts of the world that may be interested in the boat clinic approach. The film will be released globally early in 2006.
